Morning sickness is the most common symptom of pregnancy. More than half of all pregnant women suffer from it and symptoms range from mild nausea to severe nausea and vomiting. First-time moms-to-be worry when morning sickness starts and what to expect.

    What Is Morning Sickness?

  1. Morning sickness can actually occur at any time of the day or night and is caused by hormonal changes in the body as a result of pregnancy. In addition to being the most common pregnancy symptom, it is also one of the first, and, in addition to other early symptoms of pregnancy including swollen breasts and a missed period, is often the first clue that a woman is pregnant.
  2. How Soon Can Morning Sickness Start?

  3. Morning sickness can start very early in the pregnancy, with most cases starting between four and six weeks and lasting until week 14 or 16. In some cases, however, morning sickness can start on the day after conception and some lucky women never experience it all. While morning sickness generally abates after the first trimester, experiencing morning sickness at any time during pregnancy is considered normal.
  4. No Morning Sickness?

  5. Although more than half of all women do experience some form of morning sickness, it is perfectly normal to not experience it at all. Some studies do indicate that morning sickness is a sign of healthy pregnancy, but no morning sickness does not automatically mean that there is something wrong. Mention it to your doctor at your next prenatal checkup if you are still concerned.
  6. Alleviate the Symptoms

  7. Most experts recommend eating smaller meals throughout the day to help curb nausea. According to MorningSicknessHelp.com, pregnant women should avoid spicy foods and liquids with meals to help to alleviate symptoms.

Eating crackers and drinking plenty of water, as well as napping during the day and avoiding warm places can help as well. Some women also find relief by drinking ginger tea and by wearing motion sickness wristbands.
  8. Your Prenatal Health

  9. From finding out information about symptoms of morning sickness to receiving personalized, professional advice about your pregnancy, your prenatal appointments with your doctor are vital to a healthy, happy pregnancy. Make sure to keep all of your appointments and follow your doctor's prenatal health care recommendations.
