Les Paul Studio Vs. Les Paul Standard
The two most common versions of the Les Paul guitar are the Les Paul Standard and Les Paul Studio series. Gibson and Epiphone produce the two lines. Each series is made with different guitarists in mind, so each series potentially could be the correct guitar for someone depending on his own needs and preferences.
-
Gibson Les Paul Standard
-
The Gibson Les Paul Standard is the flagship model for Gibson Guitars. This is the aesthetic most closely identified with them. This guitar features all the tonal quality expected from a Gibson guitar. The aesthetic features receive the same attention to detail as the tonal features. Carved maple tops, neck binding and other luxury features are found on almost any Les Paul Standard.
Gibson Les Paul Studio
-
The Gibson Les Paul Studio was designed with studio musicians in mind. Studio players are more concerned with tone and cost than the aesthetics of a guitar. All the nice visual details on the Les Paul Standard do require more time and procedures to add to the guitar. The Les Paul Studio removes almost all the aesthetic features while maintaining all the tonal qualities of the Les Paul Standard. The Les Paul Studio sounds just like a Les Paul Standard but with a substantially lower price tag.
-
Epiphone Les Paul Standard
-
Epiphone guitars are primarily lower-cost versions of Gibson models targeted at students and hobbyists. The Epiphone Les Paul Standard looks almost identical to a Gibson Les Paul Standard but with a dramatically lower price tag. The Epiphone version uses lower quality parts and cheaper labor to produce it, and it has a lower standard of quality control.
Epiphone Les Paul Studio
-
The Epiphone Les Paul Studio is the less visually appealing version of the Epiphone Les Paul Standard. It performs the exact same function as the Gibson Les Paul Studio does for the Gibson Les Paul Standard. The Epiphone price tag is further decreased by removing the superficial elements to the guitar design. The Epiphone Les Paul Studio still is functionally just as good as the Epiphone Les Paul Standard but with a lower price tag.
Comparison
-
Both Gibson models are substantially more expensive than their Epiphone counterparts. The Gibson Les Paul Standard is the most expensive of the guitars, followed by the Gibson Les Paul Studio, the Epiphone Les Paul Standard and the Epiphone Les Paul Studio. From a functional standpoint, both Gibson guitars are the same quality. The two Epiphone guitars are about the same quality but are still inferior to the Gibson models. The Epiphone guitars are better suited for hobbyists and students. The Gibson Les Paul Studio is better suited for studio musicians. The Gibson Les Paul Standard is better for live musicians concerned about the stage appearance of their guitars.
