Side Effects After Tubal Reversal

When it comes to a more permanent form of birth control, many women opt for tubal ligation, a surgery that involves cutting or clipping the fallopian tubes to stop eggs from passing and getting fertilized. It is estimated that as many as one-quarter of the women who have this procedure end up regretting their decision and consider a tubal ligation reversal. Tubal ligation reversal surgery is not something that one should undertake lightly, and involves side effects that need to be given as much thought and consideration as the original tubal ligation surgery.

  1. Post-surgical complications

    • As with any type of major surgery, complications are always a possibility, and a tubal ligation reversal is no exception. Although uncommon, side effects include bleeding, infection, and damage to nearby organs like the bowels or bladder. In addition, the surgery requires anesthesia, which also has a variety of potential side effects.

    Urinary Tract Infection

    • You have a higher risk of getting urinary tract infections as a result of a tubal ligation reversal than you would without the surgery. Urinary tract infections can cause pain and high fevers, which if left untreated can progress to a more debilitating kidney infection.

    Ectopic Pregnancy

    • Approximately one in 100 women will experience an ectopic pregnancy over the course of their lifetime. The odds increase for those women who have had a tubal ligation surgery, and it is estimated that a woman's risk increases to almost five in 100.

    Laparoscopic Surgery Side Effects

    • Although a less invasive laparoscopic surgical technique is more commonplace, it is not without its own side effects. The most common complication with laparoscopic surgery is inflammation at the surgery site. Fortunately, the risk for anesthesia complications are reduced since the surgery takes less time and uses localized anesthesia.

    Diminished Chances of Conception Success

    • It is estimated that between 60 and 80 percent of tubal ligation reversals are successful in leading to conception. While these rates are still higher than other fertility options, such as in-vitro fertilization, regret is a common "emotional side effect" expressed among women who have undergone this surgery.
