- Emergency fire procedures are mapped out in a detailed safety plan that shows the most efficient way students and staff are to exit the building in case of a fire. Fire safety plans also include various practice drills throughout the school year. Fire drills allow the students and staff to practice exiting the building in an orderly fashion in case of a fire emergency. Teachers also are required to display the fire safety exit plans somewhere in their classrooms.
- In addition to the general rules of safety for each school, individual classroom instructors often create their own rules for their students. Classroom rules encourage optimal safety within the classroom and immediate hallways surrounding the teacher's room. Such rules may include adhering to language standards (no use of profanity or words that will provoke physical violence), keeping hands and feet to yourself, no chewing gum, and no food and drinks (to prevent any situations of allergic reactions, choking or common accidents like slipping on a wet floor).
- Students and staff alike are held to certain behavior expectations. Acting out against these expectations may result in an unsafe situation at school. Therefore, discipline (and the consequences for disobeying the discipline codes) are heavily enforced at most schools. For example, students are to refrain from any physical altercations on school grounds. Fights or physical altercations could erupt and be a potentially unsafe situation for all involved.
- Educators and all school staff in any school are trained to report incidents and accidents that occur on school grounds. Reporting these occurrences may involve several steps, including completing an accident/incident report and getting it signed by the proper witnesses. Additionally, calling a student's parent or guardian to alert them of any recent accidents or incidents is proper protocol.
- Most schools institute and train everyone in emergency preparedness in case there is an extreme emergency situation such as a bomb threat, shooting or a medical emergency. Some schools also require all staff to know basic CPR and first aid.
- According to Scholastic's six rules for safety, children and parents should be fully aware of their bus routes. Students should also have an alternative means of transportation should they miss their designated bus.
