Maintaining a proper pH level in the body is important. On a scale of 1 to 14, an ideal pH level is 6.5-7.5, with the higher numbers being more alkaline and the lower numbers more acidic. All of your body's major metabolic processes, including your immunity, depend on pH balance. Diets high in alkaline foods can help you keep your weight under control, prevent acne and avoid problems like arthritis and cancer. A healthy diet should be 75 percent alkaline and 25 percent acidic.
Most vegetables are alkaline foods. Raw vegetables contain high levels of vitamins and minerals which can keep the body's cells healthy. They also have digestive enzymes which not only help to process your food, but also kill systemic yeast and parasites. You can eat raw vegetables or juice them. Juicing entails mixing them in a blender, which allows you to consume more raw vegetables as well as assimilate them better. There are also cooked vegetables that help alkalize the body.
Vegetables that have moderate to high levels of alkaline are broccoli, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, carrots, celery, lettuce, radishes, spinach, cabbage, asparagus, artichokes, cauliflower, peas, green beans, turnips, watercress, brussels sprouts and garlic.
Many fruits, except for cranberries, are alkaline in nature. Fruits contain many essential vitamins and minerals. Fruits also have digestive enzymes which can aid in the digestive process and fight off foreign invaders. They are also natural laxatives which can keep the bowels regular.
Fruits that can alkalize the body include mangoes, kiwi, avocados, lemons, limes, grapefruit, oranges, honeydew melons, apples, pineapples, figs, apricots, cantaloupe, watermelon, grapes, blueberries, blackberries, bananas, peaches, pears, nectarines and cherries.
Most protein foods such as beef, pork, turkey and fish are acidic foods. But there are several protein foods that can alkalize the body. These include chicken breast, cottage cheese, yogurt, almonds, chestnuts, eggs and tofu. A meal that contains a chicken breast, sweet potato, green beans and a salad would be entirely alkaline.
Spices & Seasoning
Some spices and seasonings are alkaline foods. They can be added to salads and foods to help counteract certain acid foods. Some of the these spices and seasonings include cinnamon, ginger, curry, sea salt, mustard, miso, chili pepper and tamari.
There are a number of beverages that can help alkalize your diet. These include mineral water, apple cider vinegar, vegetable juices, green juices, orange juice, grapefruit juice, organic milk (unpasteurized), green tea, herbal tea, dandelion tea, ginseng tea, banchi tea and kombucha.
