Fun Persuasive Speech Topics

The same old topics always pop up in persuasive speeches, which is probably why so many writers dread such speeches. However, there are many fun and interesting topics that students and other writers can write about like taxes on fast food, home schooling, minimum wage, school uniforms and marijuana.

  1. Taxes on Fast Food

    • Since fast food is extremely inexpensive in comparison to normal restaurant meals and grocery bills, many people turn to it to provide for their family and save some money in the process. This consumption of fast food is almost daily for many people, and it definitely shows. The unnecessary consumption of fast food is a major cause of obesity today, so many states are urging to tax fast food in hopes to stop the obesity problem. Would this be fair to those who can't afford to pay the tax on fast food? Writers can choose to debate whether or not there should be taxes on fast food.

    Home Schooling

    • Many believe that home schooling is a great alternative to public or private schooling. The reasons include, but are not limited to: constant family travel, flexibility, comfort of the home and trusting in someone else (or a parent) to teach instead of a bunch of teachers. Although these may seem like good enough reasons to want to have your child home schooled, many argue that children will lack social skills and ultimately fair worse off after completing school and being exposed to the real work. This topic makes a great argument.

    Minimum Wage

    • Minimum wage is always a persuasive speech topic. The cost of living is always going up and people need more money to survive. It becomes so bad sometimes that people need two or three jobs just to get by. Should minimum wage be raised, or should people learn how to better handle finances and debt?

    School Uniforms

    • Over the years it seems that kids like to wear less and less. Instead of t-shirts, students wear tank tops that are a bit too revealing. Instead of jeans or pants, students wear short shorts or wear their pants below their bottoms. This has stirred teachers and parents crazy, and finally, some schools have taken action against their school's dress code. In order to create a safe and effective learning experience for everyone, schools have passed school uniform codes. Many feel that is unfair, especially if they followed the previous dress code. School uniforms are an additional expense, but they do make everyone equal and take away from distractions. What's your take on the situation?

    Legalization of Marijuana

    • This is always a major controversial topic that people get real heated over. Although there are medical benefits of marijuana, the drug is associated mostly with its negative effects and possibly of being a gateway drug. What's challenging about writing a persuasive speech on marijuana is to be able to present solid, scientific facts, since what we really think we know about marijuana on the news is often a myth.
