U.S. News and World Report's best college rankings is a trusted list of universities, including veterinary schools. According to this annual ranking, the list of top veterinary schools consistently includes Cornell University, Colorado State University, the University of California-Davis, the University of Pennsylvania and Texas A&M University.

  1. Cornell University

    • Cornell University is located in Ithaca, New York, and is home to the Baker Institute for Animal Health, one of the oldest veterinary research centers in the United States. Through its veterinary medicine program, Cornell University seeks to advance both animal and human health. Its strengths lie in comparative medicine, gene therapy and vaccine research. Students will take courses in a number of affiliated departments, including biomedical sciences, molecular medicine, population medicine and diagnostic sciences.

    Colorado State University

    • Colorado State University is located in Fort Collins. Its veterinary science program, housed with the department of biomedical sciences, offers several degree options for veterinary students. For example, they may complete a joint degree with a masters of business administration, masters of public health or a doctorate in a related field.

      Colorado State also operates a number of specialty centers and institutes, including a small animal hospital, a large animal hospital, and an emergency medicine and critical care unit.

    The University of California-Davis

    • The veterinary medicine school at UC Davis was established in 1948, and is the only one in the University of California system. This school offers masters of science or doctorate degrees in 17 academic fields, and its hospital residency program offers training in 32 specializations. Students may also contribute to the 25 different research centers maintained by the school. These research centers include the SeaDoc Society, dedicated to the health of marine wildlife; the Dairy Food Safety Laboratory; and the Wildlife Health Center.

    The University of Pennsylvania

    • Divided between Philadelphia and Kennett Square, the University of Pennsylvania has much to offer its students. Complementing their studies in anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology and physiology, students can work in the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital, which services some 31,000 small animals each year. For those interested in large animals, there's the George D. Widener Hospital, which counts 25,000 patient visits per year. About 16,000 of those visits come through its field service program.

      Research at the University of Pennsylvania stresses the fundamentals of cellular life and the role it plays in disease.

    Texas A&M University

    • Located in College Station, Texas A&M University maintains one of the oldest veterinary science programs in the country. Prospective students should plan on four years of study here: three years of course work and one year of clinical work. As part of the program, students may spend considerable time in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, which accommodates large animals, small animals and exotic animals alike. Texas A&M is dedicated to serving the state of Texas.

    Other Top Schools

    • According to U.S. News, Michigan State University, Ohio State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison also offer top-notch veterinary programs.
