Aciphex Vs. Nexium

Medications such as Aciphex and Nexium are often prescribed to treat a medical condition called acid reflux disease, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease. Reflux happens when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus causing various symptoms, such as burning, belching and a bad taste in the mouth. It can also erode the delicate lining of the esophagus, which, if left untreated, may lead to difficulty swallowing, scarring, bleeding and other possible serious conditions.

Aciphex

Aciphex, otherwise known as rabeprazole sodium, is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces the acid your stomach produces. One pill taken once daily, Aciphex is prescribed for persistent heartburn and other symptoms associated with acid reflux disease. Short-term treatments of four to eight weeks are used for relief and healing of erosive (damaging) reflux disease.

Aciphex Warnings

The most common reported side effects of Aciphex in adults are pain, sore throat, constipation, gas and infection. Adolescents may experience headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. It is important to tell your doctor if you are taking atazanavir, digoxin, warfarin, iron salts or ketoconazole. This medication may also cause a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Patients taking antibiotics are especially susceptible. If you experience itching, hives, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, difficulty breathing or any swelling of the hands, face or mouth, you are advised to consult your doctor immediately.

Nexium

Nexium (esomeprazole), commonly referred to as the "purple pill," is also a proton pump inhibitor. Taken once a day, preferably an hour before a meal and at the same time each day, it is prescribed for symptoms such as heartburn, sour taste, upset stomach, chest pains not associated with the heart and persistent cough. Like Aciphex, it is also used to for short-term treatment, especially in children under 18 years of age. Nexium can be taken as a capsule or oral suspension.

Nexium Warnings

Nexium side effects include headache, diarrhea and abdominal pain. For children up to age 17, Nexium can be prescribed for short-term treatment. Side effects for adolescents include diarrhea, nausea, sleepiness and abdominal pain. Inform your physician or pharmacist of any prescription and/or over-the-counter medications you are currently taking. Drugs where gastric pH is important, such as ketoconazole, iron salts and digoxin, can be affected by proton pump inhibitors.
