There are a large number of university programs dedicated to physical therapy and sports medicine, and it is a growing field where there are expected to be more jobs available in the future than there are today. This makes it a popular course of study for students interested in getting into medicine. A physical therapist usually has a minimum of a master’s degree in physical therapy from an accredited program, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The work a physical therapist does involves restoring function, improving mobility and relieving pain in people with injuries or diseases. The University of Southern California, located in Los Angeles, is considered the top school in the country for obtaining a post-graduate degree in physical therapy, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2008 survey. The Doctor of Physical Therapy program is considered among the best programs available in the field because it integrates a dynamic learning environment with patient care and active research.

The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences ranked just behind USC in the U.S. News and World Report survey. The school offers a three-year program leading to the Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. The program is integrated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and offers placement in acute care, orthopedics, sports medicine and other specialized areas.
