Frames
-
Frames are constructed from PVC pipe, electrical conduit, galvanized steel pipe or lumber. These items can be used in combination depending on the structure type and size being erected.
Coverings
-
The structural type of greenhouse built determines the type of covering that will be used. Tempered glass is recommended because of its durability. Glass is a traditional covering for rigid frame and post and rafter greenhouses. High grade fiberglass is used in lieu of tempered glass and has a higher durability. Rounded or hoop greenhouses require a flexible cover such as double wall plastic or film plastic.

Flooring
-
Concrete slabs are used for permanent structures. Concrete slabs are easy to clean and provide a non-slip footing. Gravel, paving stones or loose stone is recommended for other structural styles. These loose foundations allow water and soil mixtures to flow out preventing a slick walkway.
Air Circulation and Ventilation
-
Fans are used to circulate the air and maintain even temperatures, humidity and carbon dioxide levels throughout the greenhouse. Dual speed fans with thermostatic controls are sufficient for small greenhouses. Larger commercials fans and exhaust fans are more efficient for large spaces.
Watering Systems
-
Small greenhouses do not necessitate automatic watering systems and can be done by hand using watering cans and a hose with a spray nozzle. Larger greenhouses require automatic watering systems that are set up to meet the requirements of a wide variety of plant types.
