Benefits of Goji Berries
Goji berries come from the Himalayas and have been used for thousands of years by herbalists in China, Tibet and India. The berries are said to help eyesight, protect the liver, improve blood circulation and boost immune function. Known in Asia as wolfberries, they are an increasingly popular food in the West. They are similar in shape and texture to raisins, and have a slightly sweet and sour taste that is somewhat tangy.

How to eat goji berries
-
Goji berries are eaten raw, brewed into a tea, added to Chinese soups, or made into liquid extracts in traditional culture. They are often added to rice congee, and used with chicken or pork, vegetables, and other herbs in Chinese tonic soups. There are also various wines containing a blend of grape wine and goji berries.
In the West, they come in juice form, dried and even in snack items like trail mix with nuts and raisins. Goji berries are high in Vitamin C, comparable to many citrus fruits and strawberries.
Uses of the berries
-
Both in Europe and the United States, goji berries have been heavily marketed in recent years as having strong anti-aging effects, as well as being an anti-oxidant, important in various body functions. There is not a lot of scientific research on the berries, although a couple of studies have shown possible potential benefits against cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases, as well as glaucoma and macular degeneration. They may also have some anti-cancer effects and help to modulate the immune system.

Health Benefits
-
Like other fruits, goji berries have many vitamins and minerals that are good for your health. They are a rich source of potassium, and low levels of potassium can interfere with pituitary gland function, which produces our growth hormone. They are also a rich source of amino acids, which promote production of the growth hormone.
Until there is more research, the best course is to include goji in a balanced diet combined with exercise. Don't expect these berries to cure cancer or replace a visit to the doctor.
Research
-
Most of the research on the berries has been done in China, and some benefits to the immune system have been identified. In 1988, the Beijing Nutrition Research Institute carried out nutritional composition studies of the goji berry. Their findings demonstrated that the berries contain a large range of vitamins, minerals, protein, amino acids, essential fats, and health-enhancing phytonutrients.
Traditionally, goji berries have been regarded in Asia as a strong sexual tonic. They have also been used in Asia for treating diabetes, regulating high blood sugar, and in treating digestive problems like ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome.
