Bad Side Effects of Lorazepam

Lorazepam is the generic name for Ativan. Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine. Benzodiazepines affect chemicals in your brain to reduce your symptoms of anxiety and depression. Lorazepam is available by prescription only. If you take lorazepam, keep in mind that it may be habit-forming. It should not be used for a period of longer than 4 months, unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. Lorazepam may cause withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking it abruptly, so talk to your doctor about gradually reducing your dose.

  1. Side Effects

    • You may experience some side effects while taking lorazepam. If these side effects become bothersome, check with your doctor. Side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, blurred vision, changes in appetite, skin rash, nausea, vomiting, constipation, amnesia, difficulty concentrating, lack of balance, muscle weakness and insomnia.

    Serious Side Effects

    • It's possible that lorazepam will also cause more serious side effects. If you experience any serious side effects, call your doctor immediately. These side effects may include confusion, hallucinations, hyperactivity, agitation, hostility, depression, suicidal thoughts, fainting or lightheadedness.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Some people may be allergic to lorazepam. If you experience an allergic reaction, go to the emergency room immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include problems breathing, hives and a swelling of the facial area, such as the mouth, lips, tongue or throat.

    Overdose

    • It's essential to carefully follow all dosing instructions. However, if you think you've overdosed on lorazepam, get medical attention immediately. Overdosing on this drug can be fatal. The symptoms of an overdose can include fainting, coma, muscle weakness, confusion and extreme drowsiness.

    Pre-existing Conditions

    • Some pre-existing medical conditions may preclude you from taking lorazepam, or you may need an adjusted dose. You may also need tests to determine whether you can safely take this drug. Never use lorazepam if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding. Tell your doctor if you have glaucoma, asthma, bronchitis, other breathing problem, kidney or liver disease, a history of drug or alcohol addiction or a history of suicidal thoughts and depression.

    Interactions

    • Lorazepam may interact with other medications or over-the-counter supplements. Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including nonprescription drugs. Lorazepam should not be used with barbiturates, an MAOI, any psychiatric medication, any narcotic medication or antidepressants. The use of cold medications, allergy drugs, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants or drugs to manage seizures while taking lorazepam can increase side effects. In addition, do not consume alcohol while taking lorazepam.
