Papulopustular Rosacea Treatment

Papulopustular rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by redness in the face and tiny, red bumps filled with pus (pustules). It is caused by inflammation and will get worse over time if left untreated. Most people experience a cycle of flare-ups followed by a decrease in symptoms which then move into another flare-up. Many treatments and self-care strategies are available to help manage this condition.

  1. Topical Medication

    • Topical medications can treat inflammation and redness. The most common topical medications for this condition include the antibiotic metronidazole, tretinoin (a derivative of vitamin A), benzoyl peroxide and azelaic acid.

    Oral Antibiotics

    • Oral antibiotics are another common medication and are usually prescribed in combination with a topical treatment. Rather than kill bacteria, oral antibiotics can help reduce inflammation caused by rosacea. Your doctor will most likely prescribe tetracycline, minocycline or erythromycin.

    Isotretinoin (Accutane)

    • Accutane is a very powerful oral medication only used if your rosacea is severe or you have not responded to other treatments. Normally prescribed for cystic acne, it interferes with the production of oil in the skin. Your doctor needs to monitor you closely when taking this medication to make sure you are not experiencing any potentially serious side effects such as liver damage. It causes severe birth defects, which precludes its use by pregnant women.

    Natural Supplements

    • According to natural health expert Dr. Andrew Weil, taking supplements of gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) can improve skin health and fight inflammation. Evening primrose oil, black currant oil and borage oil all contain this fatty acid. Take 500 mg twice daily; it takes about six to eight weeks to notice a change.

Gotu kola, a principal herb in traditional Indian medicine, has a long history of use treating skin conditions. Anecdotal reports suggest it might be helpful for rosacea, but no scientic evidence exists for this claim.

    Surgery

    • Papulopustular rosacea can cause permanent redness and enlarged blood vessels. Laser surgery and electrosurgery can shrink the appearance of the blood vessels, remove tissue buildup around the nose and improve your overall appearance.

    Self-Care Strategies

    • It is important to keep track of flare-ups to determine any specific triggers for papulopustular rosacea. Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 daily. Be sure to cover your face in the winter. Try not to rub or touch your face too much to avoid irritating it and avoid skin care products that contain alcohol. Avoid becoming overheated and drinking alcohol, both of which promote redness in the face.
