What Is Skin Writing Disease?
Skin writing disease, or dermographism, is a form of the skin condition known as hives. The condition causes welts, which look like reddish lines or scribbles, to appear when you press on your skin. Repeatedly stroking or scratching the skin can also raise welts. Skin writing disease is not a life-threatening condition, but it can be annoying, even disfiguring for periods of time.

In addition to the reddish or white welts, skin writing disease may bring on severe itching. Symptoms can be worse after washing in hot water.
Causes

According to the New Zealand Dermatologic Society (NZDS), skin writing disease occurs when pressure on the skin leads to the release of histamines, biological agents that are part of the immune system. The release of histamines near the skin triggers the welts in a small group of people.

Frequency

Many people will see a thin red or white line when they press their skin. NZDS states that only about 5 percent of people have a serious reaction that qualifies as skin writing disease. In an even smaller group of people, the condition occurs from contact with an allergen.
Time Frame

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), skin writing disease can begin at any time. It often affects young adults. Once a case develops, the symptoms can reappear for years.
Treatment

Antihistamines can help slow the immune system response and block histamines from affecting the skin. In more severe cases, dermatologists have found that shots of cortisone or adrenalin can provide relief. Phototherapy, exposing the skin to ultraviolet radiation under a doctor's supervision, may help relieve some people's symptoms.
Prevention

If you suffer from skin writing disease, try to identify and avoid any known allergens. Look for ways to reduce stress. Avoid hot showers and baths, and try to gently pat yourself dry with a towel, rather than rubbing the cloth against your skin.
