Can Best Buy Fix My Xbox 360?

While Best Buy sells Xbox 360s and offers many services for fixing computers, they do not repair Xbox 360s. They do offer a host of other services for helping you set up and start using your system, but if you need your console fixed, you will have to turn to the manufacturer--Microsoft.

  1. What Best Buy Can Do

    • Best Buy cannot fix a broken Xbox 360, but its Geek Squad does offer other gaming services. These include setting up parental controls, setting up Xbox LIVE accounts, downloading and installing any needed system updates, transferring any saved content from one hard drive to a new hard drive, configuring the Xbox 360 to a wireless network and even setting up a wireless network if one is not already in existence.

    Microsoft Can Repair Xbox 360s

    • However, if your Xbox 360 has displayed the dreaded three red lights (also known as the "red ring of death"), Microsoft will have to be the company to repair your console. Microsoft covers all repairs for the three red lights within three years after the original purchase date of the system. If your system is older than three years, Microsoft will still repair it, but for a fee of approximately $100 (in 2009). Microsoft, however, will not repair any cosmetic damage or normal wear and tear.

    Contacting Microsoft for Repairs

    • Before Microsoft can start to help, your system must be registered online with the company. The Microsoft Repair FAQ will take you where you need to go to initially register your hardware (see link in References). Once the system is registered, you can contact the company to start the repair process. You can call Microsoft's operators, but it prefers all repair orders be completed online for better tracking, unless the repairs are for the HD DVD player, which must be scheduled over the phone. Also note that any out-of-warranty repairs for the three red lights scheduled via the phone will cost an additional fee. The repair request form can also be found on the Repair FAQ page.

    Shipping to Microsoft

    • Once your repair order is sent in, you will have to ship it to Microsoft yourself. You can either use a prepaid electronic UPS label with your own box and packaging or ask for Microsoft to send you a box with a shipping label attached. It is highly advisable to pad the system well to avoid additional damage during shipping. Do not use the original console packaging because Microsoft will not return any packaging to you. Also make sure that nothing else is packed with the console, such as power cords or accessories, and especially make sure no games are left inside the disc drive. These will also not be returned to you.

    Online Repair Status

    • The average round trip time for repairs within the United States and Canada is between 14 and 21 days, but this can vary depending on the work required for repair. Whenever a repair order is requested online, Microsoft will send an email confirmation with a confirmation number so you can track the status of your repair online.
