Ingredients for a Detox Bath
A detox bath improves circulation and stimulates internal heat in order to help the body eliminate excesses of fat and toxins. Taking regular detox baths can improve sleep quality; complexion and dermatological conditions; digestion and elimination; and calm the mind and body. While a hot water soak is enough for gentle detox, added ingredients can enhance the experience. Does this Spark an idea?

Epsom Salts
-
Epsom salt, or magnesium sulfate, is quite possibly the most common ingredient in a detox bath. Sulfate is used by the body to help eliminate environmental toxins from the body. Studies at Birmingham University in England have shown that soaking in Epsom salts raises sulfate levels, therefore increasing detoxification. Magnesium is another important detox mineral, as it is necessary for the production of cellular energy, which helps them to perform and detox properly. Factors such as a high-stress lifestyle and a diet high in fats and sugars depletes the body's magnesium stores. Use Epsom salts generously in your bath, adding 2 to 3 cups to hot water.
Ginger Powder
-
Ginger powder is a doubly effective detox bath ingredient, as it has aromatherapeutic effects and transdermal benefits. Ginger stimulates the circulatory system, activates sweating and creates warmth in the body, which in turn helps the body eliminate toxins. In fact, it is often used internally and externally in the treatment of kidney stones to improve elimination and reduce inflammation and pain. To use in your bath, add 3 to 4 tablespoons of ginger powder to the toe of an old nylon stocking, tie off the loose end and place into hot water.

Hydrogen Peroxide
-
Add about 8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide to your detox bath. Be sure the water is warm, not hot, as hot water breaks down the solution too rapidly. The increase in oxygen levels within cells boosts energy and stimulates the body, so this ingredient should not be added to a bath before bed.
Burdock Root
-
Prepare a burdock root infusion by simmering a handful of dried root in 2 quarts of water for 20 to 30 minutes. Strain the root from the water and pour the infusion into your bath. Burdock root aids the body in the excretion of uric acid.
Oat Straw
-
A handful of oat straw simmered in 2 quarts of water for 20 to 30 minutes can also be added to your bath. Oat straw, which can be purchased at herbal apothecaries or health-food markets, boosts the metabolism of the skin, allowing it to detox at a faster rate.
Clay
-
Clay is another common detox bath ingredient, as it helps to balance the pH levels of the skin and has the effect of drawing toxins from the body. While there are a variety of clays available, those from health food stores that are made from natural ingredients are the best for detox baths.
Essential Oils
-
Oils used for general detox of the skin include lemon, fennel and juniper, while rosemary, geranium and tansy stimulate detoxification of the liver and lymphatic system. Numerous essential oils can aid detoxification; however, essential oils can have adverse side effects, so it is best to speak with an aromatherapist when choosing the scents for your bath. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for use and read the warning labels.
