Facts About Toyota's FJ Cruiser

The Toyota FJ Cruiser was first shown in 2003 as a model car at an auto show, but was so universally liked that Toyota added it to its lineup of cars and SUVs in 2006. In its first year of production, the FJ helped Toyota set sales records. The SUV's unique style and performance had allowed it to quickly develop a following among car enthusiasts.

  1. Models

    • The FJ Cruiser has one body type, but three models. The least expensive is a two-wheel drive edition with a five-speed automatic, four-liter V6 engine. The other two models are four-wheel drive and feature the same four-liter V6 engine, only one comes in standard and one comes in automatic. The base prices range from $23,300 to $24,900.

    Colors

    • Toyota gives consumers the option of six factory colors for the exterior--titanium metallic, black diamond, brick, sandstorm, sun fusion and voodoo blue. No matter the exterior color, there isn't much choice inside. Toyota only offers one factory upholstery color, dark charcoal.

    Fuel Economy

    • The FJ Cruiser has a better EPA rating for city and highway gas mileage than its two main competitors--the Nissan Xterra and the Hummer H3. The FJ gets 17 miles per gallon in the city and 21 mpg on the highway, as compared to 16/20 for the Xterra and 14/18 for the H3. That gives the Cruiser a slightly better fuel economy (18 mpg) than Xterra (17 mpg) and the H3 (16 mpg).

    Accessories

    • Toyota offers a bevy of accessories to help "trick out" the FJ Cruiser. Some are functional, such as hood protectors and brush guards, which help if you're planning off-road driving. Some help the driver inside, like first aid kits, emergency assistance kits, cargo totes and navigation systems. Some aid the vehicle's performance, like performance air filters, shocks, shiftknobs and cold air intakes. Plus, you can add hands-free voice integration for your cell phone and XM Satellite radio.

    Awards

    • The 2008 model of the FJ Cruiser won several awards, all from IntelliChoice and their annual MotorChoice Awards. The FJ Cruiser was listed as a Smart Choice, as having the lowest cost of ownership in its class and the highest retained value in its class. In addition, safercar.gov gave the FJ a five-star crash safety rating for the driver's seat, the side driver's seat and the side rear passenger seat.
