Orange Pekoe Tea Benefits

Orange pekoe is a grade of black tea that is becoming quite popular. The taste of orange pekoe tea is fine and rich, and it is being promoted as an extremely healthy alternative to green tea. The benefits of orange pekoe tea are many.

  1. Artery Care

    • Clogged arteries cause heart attacks and strokes. It can be hard to know when your arteries are clogged because there are few symptoms. Orange pekoe tea may help prevent and possibly reverse artery clogging. Tea Benefits reports that, "In a recent test, Joseph Vita, M.D., of the Boston University School of Medicine, had heart patients drink either plain water or four cups of black tea daily. In a month, impaired blood vessel functioning (a risk factor for heart attack and strokes) improved about 50 percent (in those who drank black tea)." Though these results are promising, it's important to keep taking your conventional heart medicine.

    Fights Cancer

    • Cancer is one of the leading killers in the world, and its causes are widely unknown. Orange pekoe tea may offer some cancer prevention benefits, research at Rutgers University suggests. Tea contains antioxidants, including the TF-2 compound, which may stop the spread of cancer. Antioxidants help stop free radicals, which cause cell damage, leaving the body vulnerable to cancer.

    Lessens Inflammation

    • Inflammation is a painful symptom of many diseases. There are many medicines that can treat inflammation, but if you want a more natural treatment, orange pekoe tea may help. Research at Rutgers has shown that the anti-cancer compound TF-2 suppresses the Cox-2 gene, which can trigger inflammation. TF-2 is found in orange pekoe and other black teas.

    Treats Diseases

    • Some tests show that orange pekoe tea may help treat and prevent many diseases, including diarrhea, pneumonia, cystitis and skin infections. Milton Shiffenbauer of Pace University has found that tea, including orange pekoe, can destroy herpes and other viruses in your body. In addition, drinking orange pekoe tea may help destroy viruses in your mouth.

    Fight Respiratory Diseases

    • Respiratory diseases, such as asthma, reduce the amount of oxygen your body needs to distribute the energy from food. Professor's House reports that orange pekoe tea may help treat many respiratory diseases with a chemical called theophylline. This stimulant helps expand the airway, making breathing easier.
