Types of men's haircuts can be divided into three basic categories: business, active and fashion. Many corporate environments still expect men to get conventional haircuts. Men who participate in athletics (or who are in the military) tend to keep their hair short for easy care. Modern looks and long, retro styles are often popular with fashion conscious younger guys. There is some overlap between these cuts. Often, the finished "look" has to do with how the hair is styled.

    Business

  1. Business Haircut

To wear this classic men's haircut your hair is cut to about 1 inch on the sides/back and up to 3 inches on the top/front. You can have a side part or wear it brushed straight back with gel. This hairstyle works for all hair textures. Some men like their hair cut up above the ears for a conservative business look. Short sideburns and a slightly longer overall length looks more casual but still professional. A traditional haircut should be trimmed at least once every two months to stay sharp.
  2. Sports

  3. Faux Hawk Haircut

A good sports haircut is one that can be quickly whipped into shape even when it is soaked in sweat. For coarse, straight hair try a layered razor cut. A surfer cut (buzzed close on the sides with a longer top) works well for curly or wavy hair. You can easily finger style these cuts, even after taking off protective headgear. If you want a mix of sporty and stylish, try the faux hawk. Just keep some hair putty handy to give it that nicely defined center spike.
  4. Military

  5. Buzz Cut

The high and tight "Army" haircut and the buzz cut are both trimmed very close to the scalp. The hair on top is only slightly longer. An Army cut can be brushed to stand straight up while the buzz cut is intended to lie flat. These styles look distinguished on older men and confident on younger guys. These haircuts require very little maintenance and can be done at home.
  6. Modern

  7. Short Dreadlocks

Modern men's haircuts are all about shape and style. Emo cuts are highly textured and layered to express individuality. Punk styles use a combination of shaved sections and spikes to demonstrate a personal statement. Dreads and cornrows, although hardly new, tend to fall into the modern category. This is because it has taken a while for ethnic haircuts to become accepted by mainstream society.
  8. Retro

  9. Curly Retro Haircut

From shaggy mop-top styles to cascades of curls, retro men's haircuts tend to be long. These styles are popular with guys in their teens and twenties. However, if you work in an academic or artistic field you can usually get away with long hair at any age. Just keep it well groomed and make sure it compliments your face shape. Chin length hair parted in the middle looks good on men who have symmetrical features. Keeping bangs swept to one side or the other works best on most guys.
