Restylane Treatment

Restylane treatment is a cosmetic injectable used by dermatologists to improve your appearance. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, "The aging process generally causes a loss of volume as the underlying collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin fibers begin to deteriorate and fat stores in the face decrease." Cosmetic fillers, such as Restylane, can give you a more rested and youthful appearance by filling lines, wrinkles and adding volume around the eyes, nose, mouth, hands and neck.

  1. About Restylane

    • Restylane was developed in Sweden as an alternative to other cosmetic fillers such as collagen, Radiesse, and Sculptra. Restylane is made of a synthetic hyaluronic acid (natural sugar compound) that closely resembles its natural counterpart. Restylane has been in use since 1996 in countries all over the world. In 2003, the FDA approved it in the United States. Unlike other fillers, Restylane is not animal based. Skin fillers are not permanent: Restylane can last for up to six months and other fillers last about three months. Restylane is more affordable than other fillers because you will not need a treatment as often.

    Areas of Treatment

    • A qualified doctor, dermatologist or plastic surgeon should inject Restylane in a sterile environment.

You and your doctor should discuss what areas on your face or body will be enhanced if lifted, filled or smoothed out.

Common areas of concern include wrinkles around the eyes and cheeks, your tear trough or under-eye area, the nasolabial fold (line running from your nose to the corners of your mouth), chin, cheeks, lips, forehead lines, and neck and hand wrinkles.

    The Treatment

    • Treatment is very simple and takes about 30 minutes. Your doctor cleans the area with antiseptic, applies anesthesia to reduce any pain and injects the clear liquid filler into one or more points in and around the area. The hyaluronic acid filler attracts water to the area, restoring fullness and volume.

    Results

    • The results may not be noticed right away---it may take up to a week. You can return to normal activities immediately, as there is very little swelling. Side effects can include an allergic reaction, headache or nausea.

    Cautions

    • Do not use the product if you are pregnant, breast feeding or under 18 years old.
