Real Arcade Games for Mac
Mac computers are notorious for being unable to play some of the latest high-end computer games such as Lord of the Rings online. However, there are plenty of third-party developers that have made low-end games for the Mac, especially arcade-style games. From space shooters to breakout games, and from pinball to side-scroll adventure games, you can download and play these classic-style arcade games on your Mac. A great resource to download these games is the Pure-Mac website, where there are plenty of arcade games to choose from and download.

Asteroid Games
-
Asteroid games put you in a spaceship and you must fire at hurtling objects around the screen on a 360 degree playing field. The objects can be rocks or, in the case of SketchFighter 4000 by publisher Ambrosia, cute little lady bugs and other challenges. Typically, the parameter of Asteroid-type games is to shoot as many flying objects as possible while avoiding any dangers for as long as you can to get the most points. The game ends when you have lost all your lives because of damage from incoming attacks or objects. While the classic style is in 2D, some companies like GrassGames has made a 3D Asteriods version.
Breakout/Pong Games
-
In Breakout/Pong games, the objective is to bounce a ball and break rows of blocks on the opposite ends of the screen with a bumper you control. While blocks are destroyed, sometimes power ups like increase bumper speed or greater bumper size will fall for you to pick up with the bumper. The objective is to pass as many levels as possible to achieve the highest score. While most Breakout/Pong games employ those basic game principles, some like publisher Grubby Games have their own version. In Grubby Games' Fizzball, not only do you bounce the ball around, you rescue hungry animals and solve a mystery in the process.

Pinball
-
These games play much like a regular pinball machine: balls, bumpers and ramps lead to mega points. The classic objective is to ring up as many points as possible under the lives/pinballs given to you at the start of the game. However, there are themed Mac Pinball games where they add twists and give creative objectives. For example, in Fairy Tower by developer LittleWing, players must unify the four elemental spirits to activate the Fairy Tower. Another pinball arcade for the Mac called Golden Logres by Little Wing Company creates a RPG-themed pinball game and uses three tables in a single game.
Platform and Side scrollers
-
These are action arcade games where you control one character through a series of levels, collect powers ups and fight monsters. Unlike the other arcade game types mentioned, this one has a definitive end, usually fighting an epic boss who's difficult but not impossible to beat. Another added feature is the ability to play co-op with a second player so you can play with a friend and play the same adventure together. The publisher McSebi has reinvented a classic for the Mac called Bub & Bob, where you control a green or blue dinosaur and attack enemies using bubbles. Another game is called Return to Dark Castle from the publisher Super Happy Fun Fun, where you control a traveler from a faraway land to defeat the evil Black Knight who plagues a poor countryside.
Freeware and Shareware
-
One thing to keep in mind when playing these arcade games for the Mac is their licensing. In other words, the game's license could either be freeware, meaning the game is absolutely free to download and play, or it is shareware, meaning it is on a limited or trial basis until you pay for the full product. Typically with shareware, you are either given the opportunity to play through the beginning portions of the game, or you have a set time to play through the game as long as you are given. By the end of the trial, you have the choice of buying the game through the publisher or passing and playing other games.
