Side Effects of Vaniqua
Vaniqa (eflornithine hydrochloride) is a prescription cream applied to the face to reduce unwanted hair. Vaniqa directly affects the hair follicle by interfering with an enzyme the hair follicle needs for growth; thus, Vaniqa slows hair growth so you don't need to wax or shave so frequently but does not eliminate excess hair. SkinMedica, the manufacturer, advises applying Vaniqa twice daily to areas of the face with excess hair, such as above the lips or on the chin. Hair growth should decrease within about eight weeks.

Acne
-
According to Rx List, the most common side effect of Vaniqa is local irritation of the skin resulting in acne, a skin eruption that can cause erythema (reddening) of the skin with small pustules (whiteheads) and comedones (blackheads) from plugged sebaceous glands. Sometimes decreasing application to once daily may relieve symptoms, but you may need to discontinue the medication if acne persists.
Allergic Dermatitis
-
An allergic reaction can occur from any of the ingredients in Vaniqa. Typical allergic response includes erythema of the contact area as well as severe itching. You may also develop swelling of the face and lips and a rash. If this reaction occurs, thoroughly wash the cream from the face but avoid using hydrocortisone to relieve the itch as that can induce increased hair growth.

Folliculitis
-
Since Vaniqa works in the hair follicle, you can develop irritation within the follicle itself, and this can lead to infection. According to Mayo Clinic, even mild folliculitis can result in scarring. You may develop small pus-filled bumpy lesions about the hair follicle, or if the infection is deep, large very painful lesions. Erythema and itching may occur as well. Organisms that cause folliculitis include Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas. Folliculitis barbae can occur when the inflamed follicle causes the hair to curl around and pierce the skin, causing a lesion. Untreated, folliculitis lesions can spread, so you may need oral or topical antibiotics.
Systemic Reaction
-
In rare cases, you may experience a systemic reaction, resulting in dizziness, vertigo, swelling of the face or generalized weakness. Nausea, vomiting and lack of appetite can also occur. Discontinue Vaniqa and report any systemic response to a physician immediately.
Warning
-
Researchers for SkinMedica have not established the safety of Vaniqa during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Vaniqa is FDA-approved only for woman and for use on the face and not other areas of the body.
Considerations
-
Vaniqa does not result in permanent decrease in hair growth. Hair growth will return to pre-treatment levels about eight weeks after discontinuing treatment.
