AGP Vs. PCI Graphic Card

AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) and PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) are two different types of slots located on a computer motherboard. AGP and PCI each utilize different technology that controls the speed they can deliver information from the computer to the monitor. Selecting between a PCI graphics card and an AGP graphics card relies on the compatibility of the motherboard and the graphic processing needs of the user.

  1. History

    • PCI technology was introduced in 1993 by Intel and became widely adopted in 1995 with the introduction of Windows 95 and Plug and Play technology. AGP was introduced in 1996 as a solution to the heavy load that graphics cards placed on the PCI bus of computer systems.

    Function

    • PCI slots are capable of accepting a wide variety of expansion cards to be added to the computer including graphics, sound and network interface. AGP slots are dedicated specifically for graphic cards. Both types of graphics cards translate information from the computer and render the pixels that make up the image on the computer monitor.

    Types

    • Both PCI and AGP graphics cards are available that offer a range of memory capabilities. The introduction of PCIe (PCI Express) technology has decreased the availability of PCI graphics cards and is expected to replace AGP to become the new standard for graphics cards as well as other peripheral cards.

    Identification

    • Identifying the motherboard compatibility is important to determine which graphics card will work with the computer system. PCI expansion slots located on the motherboard are white in color and are longer than AGP expansion slots which are brown in color. Consulting with the operator's manual of the computer system will also provide compatibility information.

    Misconceptions

    • Because of its name, PCIe technology has led to the misconception that it is compatible with old PCI standards. PCIe technology requires specific expansion slots on a computer motherboard which are often designated as blue or green in color. PCIe graphics cards cannot be used in the standard PCI slot located on computer motherboards.

    Considerations

    • When choosing a graphics card, consideration should be given to the graphic processing needs of the users. AGP graphics cards will perform faster than like memory PCI cards based on the technology used to interface with the computer system. AGP also provides easier rendering of 3D components that is of benefit for a variety of situations, including computer gaming.
