- The allure of hiding one's identity behind a mask during the celebration Mardi Gras appeals to all social classes. Remaining unknown to partake and party without judgment or condescension is a personal freedom found only behind a mask.
- The custom of masking, or wearing a mask during Mardi Gras began first in the eighteenth century with the upper class and its desire to participate in the less refined frivolity of the working class without being identified. In turn, the working class could don a mask and attend one of the prestigious masquerade balls of the upper class.
- Masks come in many styles. Many Mardi Gras goers choose a mask that fits their personality. Novelty masks come in different animals, characters and shapes. Feather masks are more traditional and may be on a stick to allow for a quick reveal of one's identity, or without a stick so that the mask covers the head and face, obscuring one's identity. Headdress masks are even more elaborate. Venetian masks are reminiscent of the Italian version of Carnival and are beautifully designed and often covered in Swarovski stones. Rider and half masks are an easy way to add mystery to any costume. They come in a variety of colors and designs, and are inexpensive. Slightly more expensive versions are sequined masks that come in many colors including the Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold. Masks may be worn with or without additional costuming and wigs or hats.
