Distance Learning Health Courses
The number of health courses at colleges and universities across the country has grown over the last decade as more and more students seek careers in the health care field. While more classes have been added, the methods for taking these health courses has expanded as well to include video and online classes. If you are interested in specific health knowledge or plan to have a career in the health care field, it's important to find out about distance-learning health courses.

Types
-
Each college and university chooses which of their health courses are offered via distance learning. Students can generally expect health classes with little or no lab component, such as pharmacology or medical terminology, to be available online or by video, and even some lab courses, such as human anatomy and physiology, may be taken online if the institution has found a way for the student to complete the lab component from a distance. The only health courses not available through distance learning are clinical courses. These are done in person at a medical facility where students can practice what they've learned from their distance-learning health courses.
Time Frame
-
Most health courses offered via distance learning take a semester to complete. During the fall and spring semesters this is approximately four months while the summer semester is much more condensed, lasting only two months.
-
Benefits
-
Flexibility is a major benefit of taking health courses through distance learning methods as students can complete assignments, readings and tests on their own schedule. In addition, many of the health courses offered through distance learning can be used towards a degree in a specific area of the health care field such as nursing or medical transcription.
Considerations
-
Although the flexibility distance learning offers makes it enticing, online or video classes aren't for everyone. Students must be self-motivated and disciplined to do their assigned readings and homework on time rather than putting it off. They also must be able to teach themselves since interaction with a teacher and other students is limited. Health courses are notorious for being demanding and time consuming since students must really learn the information, not just for a test but to put into practice later in their careers.
Warning
-
Performing a simple search for distance learning health courses results in a number of different schools and businesses who make health classes available through distance learning methods. However, it's important that you find classes through an accredited school to have them count towards licensing requirements. You can find out what programs are accredited by contacting the health care licensing board in your state, which you can find a link to through the website of the National Council for State Boards of Nursing.
