Identification
-
Lactobacillus acidophilus, also known as L. acidophilus, is a type of bacteria which naturally occurs in the human body and can be found in the intestinal tract, mouth and vaginal tissues. This type of beneficial bacteria has been featured in many headlines and advertisements in recent years due to its purported health benefits which include enhanced digestion, improved immune function and decreased yeast infections in the body.
Enriched Milk
-
Milk which has been enriched with Lactobacillus acidophilus, also known as sweet milk or L. acidophilus milk, is one type of dairy product which contains this beneficial bacterium. Acidophilus enriched milk is a little thicker than regular milk with a slightly tangy flavor and subtle sweet taste; most types of L. acidophilus milk are available in low-fat or nonfat products.

Enriched Buttermilk
-
Buttermilk is created by adding beneficial lactic acid producing bacteria to pasteurized milk. Lactobacillus acidophilus may be added to enriched buttermilk as an additional beneficial bacteria, but the primary lactic acid producing bacteria used to create buttermilk is Lactococcus lactic. The addition of L. acidophilus to buttermilk does not change the traditional thick consistency, taste or overall nutritional value of the buttermilk.
Yogurt
-
L. acidophilus is an ingredient in most yogurts, and yogurt is one of the more popular Lactobacillus acidophilus foods on today's market. The amount of L. acidophilus added to the yogurt varies by brands, and some brands may contain additional beneficial bacteria. If consumers would like to purchase yogurt specifically to gain health benefits from eating beneficial bacteria, it is recommended that they choose yogurts which are low in sugar and artificial flavorings.
Some Soy Foods
-
Soy foods which include soy yogurts, miso and tempeh all contain small amounts of Lactobacillus acidophilus. These foods often provide a good vegan source of L. acidophilus for those who do not wish to eat dairy products, but some soy yogurts are not vegan approved and concerned consumers should always check the labels.
