Sudoku Online Information
It has been four years since Sudoku first graced the pages of "The New York Times," renowned puzzle master Will Shortz released a collection and the Japanese creation developed into a national craze. The appeal of Sudoku has not worn off, either. It is seen in newspapers across the nation and bookstores still boast volumes of Sudoku books. But if you would rather get your fix online, there are many opportunities to play Sudoku free on the Internet.
-
Web Sudoku
-
WebSudoku.com is a go-to resource for Sudoku puzzles (see link in References). According to the site, there are literally billions of puzzles available, falling into the categories of easy, hard, medium or evil, which is for the most advanced of players. The site also includes a jigsaw version of the game (JigSawDoku) and a variety of puzzles styled in different formats, like zigzags, letters for numbers and larger boards.
DKM Software
-
Another free Sudoku site, DKMSoftware.com offers five different types of Sudoku. These include standard Sudoku; Sudoku Sniper, in which the player is matched against someone else and rewarded when they fill in the correct numbers first; Samurai Sudoku, a five-grid, overlapping version based on the original concept; Hyper Sudoku, which includes four extra blocks; and Word Sudoku, which takes the concept and changes it into a crossword puzzle-style game.

Sudoku Slam
-
SudokuSlam.com includes two different free modes: traditional Sudoku and Sudoku Slam (see link in References). The latter has users eliminate all incorrect numbers rather than fill them in on a (mostly) blank slate. Additional features, like the ability to save puzzles, differently colored boards and an autofill option separate this site from others, although Sudoku Slam is undoubtedly the most unusual part of this site.
Killer Sudoku Online
-
KillerSudokuOnline.com focuses solely on the most difficult Sudokus (see link in Resources). If you consider yourself an expert, this site is ideal for you; otherwise, steer clear and stick to WebSudoku.com or DKMSoftware.com. Here, there is an alternative to the typical Sudokus in the form of "Greater Than" puzzles, which include greater and less than signs between boxes, indicating that a number is smaller or larger than the one which corresponds with those signs. The site also includes a section of tips on improving your Sudoku style.
Jigsaw Sudoku
-
Looking for an alternative to standard Sudoku and these tougher variations? Jigsawdoku.com puts the puzzle in jigsaw format with a twist: Here, there are only the numbers one through six rather than one through nine. This makes for a quicker challenge, albeit with limited alternatives for solutions. This can be a fine choice for younger players who have not experienced those "evil" Sudokus and do not wish to just yet (see link in Resources).
