Cures for Insomnia

There are many things that can keep you up at night. It may be stress, worries or the fact that you're just not tired. It is important for everyone to get a good night's rest in order to function well the following day. Thankfully, there are some cures for insomnia that have proven to work for those who have trouble relaxing and getting enough sleep.

  1. Warm Bath

    • Indulging in a warm bath two hours before going to bed can help you fall asleep faster. The heat of the water will help relax your body, which is necessary in order to get a good night's sleep. For added effectiveness, turn the lights off and bathe in the light of a few scented candles. Avoid bathing immediately before bedtime, however, as the act can stimulate your mind and body and keep you from getting to sleep.

    Lavender

    • It is important to relax when you are lying in bed trying to sleep. Smelling lavender before you lie down can help stimulate the relaxation response in the brain. Light a lavender candle or apply lavender scented lotion to your body in order for its effects to work. The scent also helps reduce stress levels, another factor that can keep you from sleeping well through the night.

    Sleep in the Dark

    • Sleeping in the dark will help prevent any distractions and help your body go to sleep--and stay asleep--until morning. Close the curtains and turn off all lights in order to create an environment that promotes sleeping. Shut off the radio and TV as well, as the light and noise can prevent a restful sleep.

    Set a Sleep Schedule

    • Closely following a sleep schedule every night is an effective cure for insomnia. It may be hard to go to sleep on nights you have to be up early the next morning when you are staying up late and sleeping in on other days. Create a schedule that allows you to get seven to eight hours of sleep at night. Include enough time to wind down and get to sleep. Getting your body into a routine can relieve the insomnia, and have you sleeping properly each night.

    Sleeping Aids

    • There are over-the-counter medications available to help those struggling with insomnia to get to sleep every night. These medicines should only be taken when other remedies for insomnia do not work. Avoid taking more than the recommended dosage as directed on the label. An addiction to sleeping pills can occur, so avoid using these medications for more than one week at a time.
