Natural Herbs for Dry Hair

If your hair is feeling a bit dry and lifeless as a result of exposure to blow dryers, curling irons, perms, dyes or excessive wind and sun, there are several herbal treatments that can restore your hair to its former luster.   1. Aloe

    • Aloe is nourishing for all hair types, but it is especially effective in returning moisture to dry hair. Aloe is also soothing to a dry and itchy scalp. To make a simple and effective dry hair treatment, squeeze the juice from an aloe vera leaf. Mix the juice with 2 tsp. of petroleum jelly, and massage it into the hair and scalp. Aloe can also be mixed with beneficial essential oils and massaged into the hair.

    Rosemary

    • Rosemary can be combined with a few simple ingredients to make a beneficial treatment for dry and lifeless hair. The first step is to brew a cup of rosemary tea. Combine 4 tsp. of the tea with 4 tbsp. of avocado, jojoba or olive oil. Whip two eggs into the mixture, and store it in a bottle with a secure lid. Work the rosemary hair treatment into your hair and leave it in for 20 minutes, then shampoo as usual.

    Comfrey

    • Dried comfrey root combined with chamomile and rosemary can make an herbal shampoo that is especially beneficial for dry, damaged hair. Boil 1 tbsp. of dried comfrey root in a cup of water with 1 tbsp. each of dried rosemary and chamomile. Remove the herbal mixture from the heat and let it brew for 20 minutes. Strain the herbs from the water and stir in 2/3 cup of mild shampoo, 1/3 cup of cream or milk and one beaten egg. Store the comfrey shampoo in the refrigerator.

    Lavender

    • Lavender is an effective herbal treatment for dry, brittle hair, and can be combined with coconut oil for a nourishing scalp massage. Simply combine equal parts of coconut oil and lavender oil, and massage it into your hair and scalp. Leave it in your hair for a few minutes and shampoo as usual. Within a few days you should notice a marked difference in the condition of your hair.

    Chamomile

    • Chamomile is a good way to turn hair from dry and brittle to soft and shiny, and can also combat dandruff and itchy scalp. The sweet smell of chamomile is an added benefit. Make an easy chamomile shampoo by combining 2 oz. of warm water with 2 tsp. of chamomile extract or essential oil. Let the mixture steep for 20 to 30 minutes, and add it to 2 oz. of baby shampoo.
