Side Effects of Monistat

Monistat is an anti-fungal medication used in the treatment of vaginal yeast infections. The medication works by weakening the strength of the cell membranes of the fungus, which in turn causes it to die. As with most yeast infection medications, there are a number of side effects associated with using this medication.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • As mentioned, there are certain side effects associated with using Monistat. Some of these side effects include mild vaginal itching, vaginal burning and irritation at the site of application. While these are considered the most common side effects associated with using this medication, they are very rare and only affect a small number of users.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Unfortunately, there are also a number of severe side effects associated with using this medication. Some of these side effects include severe allergic reaction, hives, rash, difficulty breathing, tightening of the chest, chills, fever, vaginal discharge, nausea, severe vaginal burning, stomach, pain, irritation and vomiting. These side effects are also very rare and do not affect a large amount of users.

    Important Safety Information

    • Monistat is meant for use on the vagina only and should never be used near the eyes, mouth or nose. If you get the medication in your eyes for any reason, flush them with cool water immediately. If symptoms do not improve or worsen within three days, contact your local physician for an adjusted treatment method. Never use tampons, sanitary pads, or douches while using this medication.

    Usage

    • Always use Monistat in conjunction with your doctor's orders and never in dosages that exceed what has been recommended on the label. This medication is administered in cream form through an applicator that should be placed into the vagina directly before going to bed. After inserting the applicator and releasing the medication, take it out and immediately throw it away. Only one dose of the medication is required for treatment and improved symptoms.

    Warning

    • If you experience any of the above side effects, contact your local physician immediately.

If an overdose of Monistat is suspected, contact your local poison control center and head directly to the closest emergency room.

Monistat is for vaginal use only and should never be used in the treatment of any other medical condition unless specifically prescribed by your doctor.
