Modern Hairstyles for Women With Curly Hair
Women with curly hair tend to have the most difficult time with styling. Curly hair is thick, frizzy and heavy, but there are some modern hairstyles women with curly hair can embrace. Curls create interest, volume and a wash-and-go ease with certain styles even celebrities love. Get red-carpet ready with modern looks that work best with naturally curly hair. Does this Spark an idea?

Long and Down
-
By far, the simplest and easiest do for women with curly hair is long and down. As a classic hairstyle, it will always be modern. Because curly hair is often very thick, long hair is best. Curls will tend to look less "poofy" and more elegant when they're weighed down by length. Women with long, straight hair often use a curling iron to give volume, while women with curly hair can wash and go with long locks. Trim split ends every few weeks to keep hair tame and lines clean.
One-Side Front Shoulder
-
With thick, curly hair, it's often hard to pull off an elegant red-carpet style. For a retro-turned-modern look for glamour, however, turn to Lindsay Lohan. Whether she has her hair red or blond, she does it right red-carpet style by sleekly throwing it over one shoulder in the front. This look can be achieved with or without a clip or tie holding hair in place. A bundle of wispy curls acts as natural jewelery and is best worn without a necklace.

High Front, Low Bun in Back
-
Curly hair can be exhausting. It's heavy, thick and wind can make it a disaster. To get curly hair out of your face with a modern up-do style, take a tip from Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria. While some up-dos hide the volume of curly hair, Eva knows how to show off her healthy locks while keeping them out of her face at the same time. Pull hair up and tease only the bottom layers for added height at the top of your head. Layer curls over the teased parts for a natural wave flow. Do not brush hair, as that natural curve creates interest. Tie a low bun at the bottom. Make sure the bun is not sloppy, but not too tight or cleaned up. This is a natural up-do, where the natural curl, waves and wisps of the hair work.
The 60s are Back
-
Hairstyles from the late 1950s and early 1960s are back and are now considered modern and glamorous. Many women, like Nicole Richie, are sporting controlled waves and curls. Those with naturally curly hair have an easier time with this look, because natural curls won't go flat. Moose and hairspray are helpful tools in creating this look, but too much will make hair hard and crisp looking. Try using a leave-in conditioner to wet curls and give softness and shine. Then, part hair on the side and form curls and waves with a bit of mousse on your fingers. Let hair dry and then shape again with fingers, and spray with light hairspray.
Short and Sweet
-
Short hair is often not an option for curly haired women. Because curls are thick, and tend to poof, frizz and curl up more the shorter hair gets, long hair is usually preferred. There is always an exception, however. Short curly hair is best when hair is thinner. If you have very thick hair, ask your stylist to thin it with a razor for the desired look. Meg Ryan has had a multitude of hairstyles, almost all of which were fitting to her naturally curly hair. When her hair is short, she has it choppy, which works with curls. Curls placed directly on top of curls creates poofy hair, while layering allows curl ends to lay separate.
