Styles of Fences
You face an array of choices when you're considering fencing in a property. The height of the fence, board width, color, and material are all factors to be weighed. A number of basic fence styles can be adjusted to suit individual needs and settings. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Picket
-
The wooden picket fence is a classic look for a garden or property boundary. It can be matched to a home's exterior with paint or stain. The top comes in two basic styles: dog ear and point - one is rounded, the other pointed. The fence is usually available in 8-foot-long panels that adhere together or sit side by side. Most varieties of picket fence are 4 to 6 feet in height although smaller ornamental styles of picket fence are available.
Board
-
A board fence consists of a closely fitted row of vertical wooden boards with a number of different top finishes. Typical styles include point, gothic, shadow box and tongue and groove. The picket fence is an example of a board fence. Like the picket, a board fence can be painted to suit the landscape.

Lattice
-
The lattic fence is not only a perfect complement to decorative flower beds, it also adds to privacy. It consists of a crisscross of vertical and horizontal thin boards positioned in such a way as to create an aerated checker board effect. They can be high enough to block out the outside world or low enough to complement natural borders such as hedges and trees. The lattice design comes in a variety of lengths and widths and is a perfect support for growing flowers and plants.
Post and Rail
-
The post and rail fence is reminiscent of the old west or horse ranch and consists of vertical posts spaced evenly apart and intersected with one or more horizontal posts. Today, this style is used more to indicate boundaries that keep in children or pets.
Chain Link
-
Chain link fences are a utilitarian option. They are used more for security and boundary definition than landscaping or aesthetic design. Sometimes referred to as "hurricane fencing," the chain link is exactly that - a series of metal links chained together to create a solid mesh of fence. This is a cheap way to create a boundary. It can be topped with barbed wire to discourage illegal entry.
