The D40 and D60 are both good choices for new photographers. The differences in the cameras are minimal, but may be important for some users.

The Nikon D40 and D60 are the first and third cameras in Nikon's line of digital SLR cameras for beginners. SLR cameras are more advanced than standard compact digital cameras as they give photographers more control over the camera's settings, such as the exposure, focus, shutter speed and white balance. In addition, SLR cameras feature detachable lenses for different shooting conditions and focus ranges.

Similarities in the design of the D40 and D60 are expected since they are part of the same line of cameras. In fact, the design of the cameras is nearly identical. The dimensions are the same at 5 inches wide, 3.7 inches in height and 2.5 inches in depth, and the weight is the same at 1.2 pounds. the only visible difference between the D40 and the D60 is the mode dial, which is all plastic on the D40 and plastic with a metal cap on the D60, and some of the symbols next to the buttons are different on the D60.

The D40 has a 6 megapixel sensor and the D60 has a 10 megapixel sensor. Both sensors are capable of taking high quality images, but the sensor on the D60 provides more flexibility when editing or enlarging the image.
Both cameras feature the same exposure modes, with options such as "Auto," "Portrait," "Landscape" and "Night Portrait." You can also manually change shutter speed and aperture on each camera for total control of your photographs.
The LCD monitor on each is 2.5 inches.

One key difference between the D40 and the D60 is the implementation of an anti-dust system in the D60. One drawback to using SLR cameras is the increased likelihood of dust entering the camera body and lying on the sensor, which can diminish the quality of your photographs. The sensor on the D40 needs to be cleaned by hand. The D60 has an anti-dust system that uses an airflow technique to move dust off the sensor. In addition, the sensor on the D60 will vibrate to shake off any remaining dust.

The D40 was released in 2006 and the D60 was released in 2008. Because it's a newer camera, the D60 is priced higher, while the D40 can be found at bargain prices. The only major differences between the cameras, however, are the sensor size and the anti-dust system. While the larger sensor can take higher quality photographs, you will not be disappointed with the image quality from a 6 megapixel camera. Consider purchasing the cheaper camera as you may be able to save a significant amount of money.
