Gefitinib is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of lung cancer. This medication is often used in cases when other types of chemotherapy did not work on the patient. The chemotherapy drug operates by obstructing the enzyme tyrosine kenase, which might assist in the spreading and growth of the lung cancer. As with any medication, possible side effects can occur due to taking Gefitinib.

Some common side effects could happen as a result of Gefitinib, which are generally not worrisome. However, if the side effects get worse or do not go away after a while, it might be beneficial to discuss the matter with your doctor. These side effects are abnormal weakness, dry skin, appetite loss, acne, mouth ulcers, diarrhea, vision problems, nausea, weight loss and vomiting.
-
Serious side effects are also a possibility with Gefitinib; in the case of serious side effects, seek emergency medical assistance as soon as possible. Some of these include severe exhaustion, coughing, yellowing of the eyes or skin, swelling of feet or ankles, stomach ache, persistent diarrhea, eye pain or irritation, fever, dizziness and dark-colored urine.
-
Allergic reactions are also considered to be serious side effects of Gefitinib. In situations of allergic reaction, it is necessary to immediately get medical help. Some signs of allergic reaction to Gefitinib are chest tightness; swelling of the eyelids, tongue, mouth, lips or face; problems breathing; skin rash; and breaking out into hives.
-
Exercise caution when considering taking Gefinitib. It's crucial to tell your doctor of your medical history and any present medical conditions you might have, particularly regarding liver disease or any breathing or lung-related issues (apart from lung cancer).
-
Drug interactions are possible when more than one medication is taken at the same time. Drug interactions can lead to increased or decreased effectiveness of one or more of the medications involved, as well as unpleasant and sometimes dangerous side effects. Some medicines that can lead to drug interactions with Gefinitib are ketoconazole, warfarin, phenytoin, rifampin, itraconazole, and medications that can lower stomach acid levels (like omeprazole, ranitidine, esomeprazole and lansoprazole).
