Reasons to Get a GED

The initials GED stand for General Equivalency Diploma. A GED is a test that people can take if they dropped out of high school. The test can be taken instead of attending high school classes. A GED is a useful credential that may be especially helpful for older students who do not have time to return to a classroom full time.

  1. College Attendance

    • Many colleges require potential students to possess a high school diploma in order to be admitted as students. Admission officials may accept students who have a GED in lieu of a standard diploma.

    Job Opportunities

    • Many jobs require possession of at least a high school diploma in order to be hired. Employers will also often accept candidates who have a GED.

    Achievement of an Academic Goal

    • People who dropped out of high school may struggle with feelings of decreased self-worth. They may feel less educated and academically able than their peers who have a high school diploma. Passing the GED can help restore their feelings of self-esteem. Moreover, achieving an academic goal can lead to a feeling of tremendous accomplishment. This may lead them to academics again and inspire them to apply to college or another academic institution.

    A Role Model

    • Earning your GED can help you serve as a role model. You can state that you have mastered the basics of a high school education despite obstacles that stood in your way. You can serve as an inspiration to family members or friends who may have had similar academic struggles.

    Your Own Pace

    • Some students prefer to avoid high school classes altogether. High school classes may be too fast or not proceed at a fast enough pace to keep them interested. GED students can proceed at their own pace.
