Reason for Dog Vomiting
Dogs vomit when they are sick or have an obstruction. Vomiting can also be a natural curative episode for clearing spoiled food or something toxic from the stomach or intestines. They might have swallowed a hairball that they are trying to get rid of, which is not serious. Vomiting can also be a sign of something serious. As with any symptom in your dog, if it continues, call your vet.

Eating Non-Food Items
-
Dogs will vomit from dietary indiscretions when they eat garbage, grass, leaves and other things they should not eat. Some dogs eat these things due to anxiety. They also vomit as a way of clearing their system of something that is not good for them, such as spoiled food. They can also eat grass to induce vomiting to clear a hairball, or something else that is stuck in their throat.
Change In Diet
-
Change in the dog's diet can cause him to start vomiting. When switching the dog's diet from one dog food to another, start slowly by introducing the new food in small amounts at first. Then progressively give greater amounts of the new food until the dog is used to it. Some "people food" can cause vomiting in dogs. Dogs also vomit if they eat too quickly. This type of vomit is usually chunks of undigested food.

Parasites
-
Parasites in dogs, such as round worms or hookworms, can cause vomiting. These are usually found in younger dogs and puppies. A symptom of these parasites is an extended pot belly. You can usually see the spaghetti-like round worms in the vomit. Round worms are too small to see with the naked eye. Medication can quickly remove the worms.
Blockage
-
Anything that causes a blockage to the exit of the stomach will cause vomiting. If it is a bone, it will in time most likely dissolve due to the stomach acid. If it is another foreign object, you might need to have your vet remove this. Conditions of the intestines can cause obstructions. Tumors and knots in the intestines cause blockages that can lead to vomiting. The stomach can flip, causing a twist in the intestine. This can cause vomiting.
Viral Bacteria
-
Parvo (Parvovirus) is a viral bacterial infection, and although its major symptom is urgent and explosive diarrhea, it can also cause vomiting in dogs. It is bacteria that dogs contract from stagnant water, such as a puddle. The diarrhea has an odd, almost metallic-smelling odor, which makes it relatively easy to diagnose.
Heat Stroke
-
Heat stroke in dogs can cause vomiting. This happens when your pet is left out in the sun too long. The dog becomes lethargic, pants heavily and vomits. Get him to a cool place and pour water on him to cool him off. Heat stroke can be deadly so do not leave your dog out in the heat or hot sun. Call your vet immediately if you fear your dog has heat stroke.
Others
-
Many diseases and conditions cause vomiting in dogs. Here are a few that are not as frequent as the others. kidney disease, heart worm, liver disease, adrenal gland disease, motion sickness, middle ear infection and many others.
