IRS Efile Problems
The Internet allows you to e-file your taxes online so that you can get a refund quicker or pay what you owe online. However, some problems can arise when you use the IRS e-file program. You should be aware of the potential problems and how they can affect your tax return.
-
Social Security Number and Name
-
Your social security number must match your name. If you had a name change on a W-2 or 1099 and didn't change your name on your social security number, you will would be instructed to file your tax returns to a specific address and explain the problem if there is one. Keep in mind that you should not change your name at work or on any other records until you change your social security number.
Incorrect W-2 or 1099 Information
-
The information on the W-2 and 1099 forms must be entered into the software that you are using. If the employer's EIN number is wrong or their name does not match the number, you would be instructed to mail the tax return and documents to a specified address. If you receive a response back from the IRS via the software, they will tell you what is wrong. You can correct the information and resend again if your data entry was wrong. If this was not the problem, you will need to send in a hard copy.

Not Filing Required Signed Forms
-
If you use the e-file system, you must know your adjusted gross income from the previous year as your signature. If you don't have access to your adjusted gross income amount, you can choose to sign and send a 8453 Form to the IRS within three business days from the time the IRS accepts your e-file return. If you fail to send in the signed form, you will delay your refund. The form will be available with your downloaded tax returns.
Payment for E-file
-
One problem that people have when they use the IRS e-file system is that they don't have a debit or credit card to pay for the service if needed. You cannot use a checking account, but the newest option at some software sites such as TurboTax, allows you to have the amount deducted from your return, but the price is almost double what you would pay if you had a credit or debit card.
Errors
-
The errors check system for each software catches problems where you forgot to enter information or that you enter the wrong information. Some of these error checks are so sensitive that even after you have corrected the information it may not recognize the change. This however, is a rare problem, but it can happen. You would need to send in your return by mail or start over.
