Blood Type Diets and Foods
The four blood types are O, A, B and AB. Each type possesses different antigens, or red blood cells: type A contains A antigen, B contains B antigen, AB contains both A and B antigens and O contains neither antigen. Dr. Peter D'Adamo, a noted expert on the blood types, has specific diet recommendations for each type as well as lifestyle suggestions.

Blood Type History
-
Dr. Peter D'Adamo, author of "Eat Right For Your Type" has researched how the blood types originally began. According to D'Adamo, blood types were influenced by the changing environment that occurred. Type O is the original blood type and the type of early hunters whose diet was primarily meat. Second was type A as agriculture began replacing hunting as a means of survival. Type B followed during the many environmental changes with people eating both meat and plant food. Type AB is the last type; it makes up approximately 5 to 6 percent of the population.
Diet for Type O
-
Type O blood type does best with a diet rich in meat, fish, vegetables and nuts. You should eat legumes and other types of beans sparingly. Foods that could possibly attribute to weight gain are corn, beans, brussels sprouts and cauliflower. Foods excellent for losing weight are seafood, liver, red meat, kale and broccoli.

Diet for Type A
-
D'Adamo claims that A blood types should have a diet rich in plant foods. Best foods are vegetables, tofu, grains, beans, legumes, fruit and some seafood. For weight loss, you should avoid meat, dairy, kidney beans, lima beans and wheat products. To assist in weight loss, vegetables, soy foods and pineapple are best.
Diet for Type B
-
D'Adamo suggests the balancing of meat and vegetables works well with type B. Dairy products are acceptable, as are grains, beans, legumes, vegetables and fruit. Eliminating chicken, ham, bacon and shellfish is recommended. To lose weight, avoid corn, peanuts, lentils and wheat products. The best foods to eat for losing weight are greens, eggs, venison, liver and tea.
Foods for Type AB
-
Type AB should have a mixed diet, in moderation. Suitable foods are meat, seafood, dairy, tofu, beans, grains, legumes and plant foods. If you wish to lose weight, it is best to avoid red meat, kidney beans, lima beans and corn. Tofu, seafood, greens, dairy, kelp and pineapple are high on the list for weight loss.
Lifestyle Suggestions
-
Those with blood type O do well focusing on animal protein; they work on anger management and indulge in regular vigorous exercise. Type A should focus on mainly vegetables, and those with this blood type do well with gentle exercise to reduce stress. D'Adamo suggests short naps and breaks to keep focus. Type B does well with diet variety and needs to spend time on creative outlets. Meditation is good for stress reduction. Those with type AB do well with smaller and more frequent meals. They need to cultivate spiritual ideas and avoid feeling isolated.
