Signs of Low Self Esteem in Children

Children suffer from low self-esteem just as adults do. And much like adults, their self-esteem directly impacts the quality of their life. When children have a low self-esteem the many aspects of their life may suffer, such as school work or home life. There are signs one can recognize to determine whether or not a child has low self-esteem.

  1. Shyness

    • While every child can act shy under certain situations, children with low self-esteem appear shy constantly. Think shyness in the extreme. Children will avoid taking to and playing with other children as well as avoid events and activities.

    Anxiety

    • Another sign of low self-esteem in children is excessive anxiety. Too much anxiety will manifest itself as nervousness or fear. Their anxiety will result in separation anxiety, fear to go places or try new things, for example. They might also display a reluctance to go to school.

    Negativity

    • A child with low self-esteem has a negative opinion of themselves. They will make statements to the effect that they are stupid or that nobody likes them. They will also criticize others such as their siblings.

    Irresponsibility

    • When it comes to taking responsibility for their actions, children with low self-esteem neglect any accountability. Instead of accepting responsibility for their actions, they will blame circumstances or other people for their failure. This is due largely in part to an inability to deal with failure.

    Giving Up

    • When confronted with obstacles or any degree of difficulty, children with low self-esteem quit or give up. Along with walking away from the situation, they offer excuses to justify their actions. The activity or work being boring or the child being too tired to complete it are common excuses.

    Follow Up

    • If you think your child might have low self-esteem, consult your child's pediatrician for a referral.
