Several factors contribute to sagging skin.
As we age, collagen production slows down, causing skin to sag and appear less firm. The fat under our skin also diminishes, causing our skin to appear less plump.
Other factors can that contribute to sagging skin include sun damage, gravity, stress, extreme weigh loss, smoking, repeated facial gestures (as in "laugh lines"), genetics and even certain sleeping positions. Fortunately, we have control over most of these factors. -
Many herbal remedies are believed to reduce the appearance of sagging skin. Each works in different ways.
Some remedies, like turmeric , have anti-inflammatory properties. People in many countries make it into a paste and apply it to the skin to make it appear younger.
Others herbs boast antioxidant properties. Green tea is abundant in certain antioxidants, called catchecins, which have been shown to stop prevent or slow down cancer cells activity. Green tea is also used to help protect skin from the effects of photoaging. -
Minimizing stress and maximizing sleep help people relax, therefore minimizing one's chances for developing frown lines and stress-related wrinkles.
Lavender has been used for centuries for known for its calming properties. It's usually inhaled, as an aromatherapy. On the same note. chamomile is often used in skin preparations. Chamomile has sleep-inducing properties, especially when taken as a tea before bedtime. -
When rubbed directly onto the skin, aloe vera is said to keep the skin soft and smooth. Studies show that it helps moisturize dry skin.
Ginkgo biloba is another herb commonly used in skin preparations. Besides improving memory, many believe that ginkgo helps increase blood flow, thus improving the appearance of skin.
The extract of the French maritime pine contains catchecins called procyanidins, which are also thought to prevent sagging skin. -
Claims that the use of herbal remedies can reduce the appearance of sagging skin are not approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). Most claims regarding the benefits of herbs for aging skin are based on anecdotal evidence only.
Many dermatologists conclude that preventing additional skin aging is far more effective than treating it. This means eating a healthy diet, rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains; wearing sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) religiously; keeping out of the sun between 10 AM and 4 PM; and wearing a wide-brim hat and long-sleeved shirts whenever possible.
