Acne Pigmentation Treatment

As if dealing with acne weren't enough, after blemishes heal, they can leave behind unsightly marks that mar the skin and leave red blotches and spots for months at a time. These aren't scars and will fade over time, but they still can feel just as disfiguring while they last. To speed up the fading process of pigment changes caused by acne, there are numerous treatments available. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Microdermabrasion

    • Microdermabrasion is an effective way to treat pigmentation issues caused by acne. The procedure involves using aluminum oxide crystals to remove the top layer of skin. This helps create a smoother surface and evens out your skin tone. However, several treatments may be needed to get the kind of results you'd want.

    Chemical Peels

    • Chemical peels work to even out skin tone as well, especially those cases where acne has left behind red or brown marks. The process can be done at home in milder forms using alphahydroxy acids or at your dermatologist's office with stronger chemicals like phenols. The stronger the peel, the greater recovery time. Once the chemical is placed on the face, it's allowed to set for a given period of time before being removed. This removes the top layer of skin, unclogs pores and helps fade marks caused by acne faster.

    Laser Resurfacing

    • Another way to remove acne pigmentation is to undergo laser resurfacing. A laser is used to reduce redness of the skin caused by acne and provide a smoother skin texture. The laser can be set to penetrate just the top layer of skin or several, depending on what your dermatologist thinks is best. Your skin likely will remain red and tight for a few months following the procedure, however. In some cases, laser resurfacing can cause the treated area to develop a lighter pigment than the rest of the skin.

    Tea Tree Oil

    • If you wish to go a milder route, tea tree oil is effective in helping spots caused by acne fade at a faster rate. The tea tree oil is an antimicrobrial and antibacterial, making it a good substance for the skin. However, it also works to reduce redness and even out the skin tone more quickly than it would on its own.

    Green Tea

    • Green tea is a common ingredient used in acne medications and acne scar treatments because of its anti-inflammatory properties. Green tea soothes irritated skin, reduces redness and helps to even the skin tone over time. While you won't see results overnight, green tea can produce significant results at a faster rate than your body can normally heal itself.
