Job Ideas for Stay at Home Moms

The advent of telecommuting has opened up many opportunities for work for stay-at-home moms. In many cases, it is not even necessary to sacrifice income for a mother to remain home with her children while she works. Stay-at-home mothers can pursue freelance careers in fields like computer programming, visual design and writing.

  1. Telecommuting

    • Many companies find they can save significant amounts of money by letting their employees work from home. Typically, some initiative on the part of the employee is necessary to make the shift to telecommuting. Any job that can be performed over the Internet or by phone can be transferred to a work-from-home job. Despite this, it can be relatively difficult to be hired directly into a telecommuting position unless the employer is already confident in the employee's work ethic.

    Small Business Opportunties

It is possible to run many small businesses from a residence without requiring special permits. Lawn care, home renovation, cleaning services, computer repair and crafts businesses can all be operated from home. Stay-at-home moms can run a day care center out of their own home, but special permits may be necessary, depending on their state of residency.

    Freelancing

    • Freelancing is a relatively risky and challenging career path no matter what the field, but it offers unparalleled freedom and earning potential. The ability to set your own work schedule makes it particularly appealing to stay-at-home mothers who need to shape their day around providing care for their children. Programmers, artists, writers, designers, marketers and engineers can all enjoy success as freelancers so long as they put enough time and effort into building their professional reputation, skills and finding work.

    Issues

    • People who work from home are, in most cases, self-employed, which introduces some complications. Taxes are calculated differently for the self-employed as there is no separate employer to pay partial social security and Medicare taxes. Health care coverage must be purchased separately. It is usually more financially risky to be self-employed. And planning for child care may still be necessary, depending on the type of work-from-home job you are pursuing.

    Warning

    • While there are many legitimate work opportunities for stay-at-home mothers, there are also hordes of individuals and companies that make a profit by duping people out of their money promising them work-from-home jobs in return for a fee of some kind, usually for "training," "material" or access to "special" job listings. Any service that asks for money in return for a promise of employment is highly suspect. Advertisements that claim to pay out vast salaries with little to no job requirements are also likely to be scams.
