Creative Engagement Gifts

An engagement brings out the celebrations -- and the gifts. Instead of giving an ordinary nuptial present such as stemware or a bottle of wine, get creative. Present the couple with a memorable gift that they’ll enjoy, such as an experience, a personalized gift basket, customized artwork or a video that depicts their romance.

An Experience

  • As an alternative to giving the couple more “stuff,” give them a gift of an experience. If the couple are outdoorsy types, give them a yearly pass to a nearby national or state park. If they enjoy art and culture, memberships to local museums or tickets to a special exhibit are gifts that they can use and enjoy. For the adventurous types, purchase introductory sport lessons such as surfing, archery or skydiving.

Time Capsule

  • Create a time capsule that captures moments in the couple’s lives together. Start with a wooden box that has a glass or clear Lucite top. Place photos of the couple in it from their courtship through their engagement. Include personal items such as the lyrics to their favorite song or a miniature copy of the film poster from their first date at the movies. If they frequent a certain restaurant, include a menu or a matchbox from their favorite bar. List the dates of pertinent events in their romance on a piece of paper and slip it into the box. Seal the box with instructions to open it on their first anniversary.

Romantic Gift Baskets

  • Create a gift basket filled with goodies that the couple will adore. Pack a picnic basket complete with delectable snacks, the couple’s beverages of choice and a blanket. If the couple are film buffs, create a gift basket for a movie night. Pick out a few DVDs, and add some popcorn, candy and a bottle of champagne with two glasses. For couples that like to cook, pack up a basket for a romantic dinner in. You could include an artisan bread mix, gourmet pasta and sauce, jars of various condiments and a bottle of wine to complete the meal.

Personalized Images

  • Give a gift of personalized artwork that symbolizes their engagement. A simple do-it-yourself project is transferring a photo of the couple onto canvas. Print out a photo of the couple using a laser printer. Then paint a prepared canvas with a thick layer of gel medium found at art supply stores. Press the printed photo onto the canvas and let dry overnight. Spray the canvas with water and peel off the paper, revealing the image underneath. Alternately, you could create a personalized video of the couple that feature images from the start of their romance up to their engagement.
