Air travel has become more effective and safe in recent years with greater technology and precautionary measures. Many passengers still suffer from flight anxiety, crippling them with fear as they fly. Before taking a trip on an airplane, there are a few safeguards that every passenger can employ to ensure safety as they fly. Flying doesn't have to be a terrifying experience, and simply implementing a few guidelines can make it less so.

Prepare your immune system, and be aware of your surroundings before you fly. The air on an airplane is recycled for the duration of the flight so various germs, bacteria and viruses can be circulated through the air vent system causing passengers to become sick. Before you fly, be sure to get a full night's sleep, eat a well-balanced meal and avoid sickness. If you see other passengers that appear to be under the weather, stay away from them. Wash your hands as often as you can to avoid the spreading of illness, and sanitize your seat with antibacterial wipes.

When you choose to fly, always choose to fly the largest aircraft. Airplanes that are designed to carry more than 30 passengers are evaluated and built under different guidelines than smaller ones. Larger aircraft fall into the strictest regulations for design and maintenance. Also, the larger the plane, the more likely it will be able to handle an unexpected emergency in the air. You are more likely to survive a crash in a large plane than a small plane.

When you reach a certain altitude, the captain will allow the passengers to get up and walk around, but it is strongly recommended to keep your seat belt fastened at all times. Regardless, if the pilot gives the OK or not, there is always a chance of unexpected turbulence that can occur. There have been isolated incidents where unexpected turbulence has lifted passengers from their seats and caused damage. The seat belt on an aircraft is there for your safety so use it at all times.

When you fly, you are at an unhealthy altitude. The aircraft is designed to create an artificial air-pressure environment that makes it safe to fly. Health information website www.everydayhealth.com recommends staying hydrated and steering clear of alcoholic drinks because of the high altitude. Alcohol can quickly dehydrate you, which can lead to greater issues if not taken care of. Instead of alcohol, drink water and other clear liquid drinks to ensure hydration.
