Interesting Places in Poland

Poland maintains a rich, fascinating and at times dark history that dates all the way back to the tenth century. From its deep roots in Catholicism, to its days of Nazi occupation, Poland remains a history buff's dream subject. The following cities offer tourists an interesting and in-depth look into this truly remarkable country.

  1. Warsaw

    • City living in Warsaw

As Poland's lively capital city, it stands to reason Warsaw has a lot to offer tourists. Rebuilt following its destruction during World War II bombings, the Old Town district still provides plenty of highlights. Find time to tour the region's majestic St. John's Cathedral, the century's old fortified city walls, not to mention the Old Town Marketplace, featuring authentic shops, cafes and restaurants. Leading into this district you may stumble upon the Royal Route, a series of streets featuring various historic churches and renowned places of residence.

    Wroclaw

    • Wroclaw's Market Square

Wroclaw remains one of Europe's most underrated and overlooked cities. Armed with stunning architecture, it delivers a feast for the eyes. Start your tour by visiting Rynek, a massive and charming city square. Centennial Hall, an imposing structure comprised of an enormous concrete dome, plays host to a variety of important city events. Lose yourself in the city's natural beauty as well with a trip to the Japanese Gardens and Eastern Park.

    Gniezno

    • Gniezno's cityscape

Gniezno served as Poland's first capital during the tenth century. Today the city plays host to scores of historic sites. Make plans to tour the lovely St. John Church which dates back to the fourteenth century, as well as the equally beautiful Holy Trinity Church. The Gniezno Cathedral, however, serves as the city's most beloved and cherished site. Dressed in Gothic design and twelfth century bronze doors, this historic cathedral hosted royal coronations all the way back in 1025.

    Oświęcim

    • Auschwitz concentration camp

While Oświęcim houses such enchanting edifices as the delightful Oświęcim Castle, today it has the reputation as the resident city of the notorious concentration camp simply known as Auschwitz. This grim but infinitely important landmark now serves as a reminder to the atrocious genocide of nearly six million Jews during the Nazi reign. Tours include examination of the barracks and deadly gas chambers, not to mention a collection of personal artifacts belonging to the camp's helpless victims.

    Kraków

    • Parade in Kraków

This massive city plays host to more than its fair share of renowned museums. During your time in Kraków make sure that you plan a visit to the Centre of Japanese Art and Techology, the Archaeological Museum and the always popular Bunker of Modern Art. Tour the dazzling Wawel Castle, the former residence of Poland's royal ruling families. Finally no trip to Kraków seems complete with a visit to Rynek Glowny, the city's massive medieval square.
