Whether you live year round in your cottage-style home or use it as a vacation retreat for summer weekends, decorating it can be a challenge. Some styles used in other styles of homes simply might not work in a cottage. Coastal Living magazine features styles that are specifically tailored for homes by lakes and beaches. This style can really work to bring out the natural charm of cottages, which are often by water. .

    Architecture

  1. If you are lucky enough to plan your own cottage, take advantage of different design elements to make the most of your home. Lots of big wide windows will let in the natural light. Exposed wood beams will add to the authenticity of your cottage. Nothing is better in the summer than an airy wrap-around porch.
  2. Color and Pattern

  3. Cottage style homes typically take advantage of light and subtle colors. Consider floral prints on accent pillows and upholstery. If you're not into the floral look, go for fabrics with wide stripes or nautical accents. If you need more color in your life, choose sunny yellows and watery blues rather than deep and dark colors.
  4. Decor

  5. As far as accent pieces goes, natural looks best. Use treasures found in nature to decorate your home. Use sun-bleached seashells, driftwood branches and potted plants to grace coffee tables and display shelves. If you want to hang a picture, frame vintage botanical prints or landscape paintings.
  6. Walls

  7. Though you can paint walls in any color, classic white always looks great in cottages. For a more authentic look, cover walls in bead board. Besides making the walls look like they are built out of wooden slats, the lines will add texture and interest to the all-white walls.
  8. Flooring

  9. Don't overlook the floor. Soft, plush carpet may be perfect for some homes, but hardwood definitely looks the best in a cottage. Choose a lighter colored wood for a sun-bleached look. Using reclaimed barn wood for flooring would look stunning in a cottage. If you want to save some money, get a good quality hardwood laminate.
