Top Ten Honeymoon Vacations in the United States

When planning a honeymoon, sometimes the best place to go is right at home. That is, in the United States. Several locations are perennially favorites among honeymooning couples. Whether you're looking for warm weather, cold weather, beaches, shopping or outdoor activites, these are the Top 10 places to honeymoon in the 50 states.

  1. Island Getaways

    • Suggesting Hawaii almost seems like cheating, because it's so far from the mainland. But that's what makes it great---paradise you don't need a passport to reach. If you live on the West Coast, Hawaii's very easy to get to; direct flights to Honolulu are cheap and only take a few hours. Honeymooning in Hawaii is a much more diverse experience than most people think. Each island has its own flavor and in addition to beach time, you can hike, kayak and stargaze. You can stay in affordable local hotels and motels, although most couples go for the expensive, exclusive resorts. And all-inclusive may be your best bet, as drink and food prices are high.

For East Coasters, the closest slice of island heaven is Florida's Keys. You'll find big resorts and cozy bed and breakfasts. The Keys are famous for their sunsets. Make sure to have an oceanside view for the best sunset viewing.

In the same region but slightly more exotic are the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. Each island has villa suites, island culture and snorkeling with schools of tropical fish. A number of cruises bounce from island to island, or just pick one. The shopping is grand (and inexpensive), the bars are perfect for fun nights out, and the food is delicious.

    Alaskan Cruises

    • For a cruise to cooler climes, Alaska can be a very romantic destination, especially for nature-loving couples. Almost all Alaskan cruises have spas on board. Get a couple's massage, drink wine off the port side while whales and other marine life pass by, and ask for directions in each port for trying local delicacies. If you don't like the idea of being on a floating city, there are a few local cruise operators that run much smaller vessels; you won't find as many onboard amenities but you'll be sharing the ship with less than 100 people and will see ports that can't accommodate the big ships.

    City Fun

    • New York City is a great getaway for newlyweds. Hotels have lavish suites with spa services and hot tubs; there are tons of great shows and concerts to attend; and there are plenty of romantic restaurants to splurge on. NYC is the place for a culture-filled honeymoon.

For similar amenities and excitement but warmer weather and slightly lower prices, head to Las Vegas. For a summer honeymoon, try a hotel with a swim-up bar for a peaceful, beachside feel. Las Vegas has great restaurants and nightlife, and you can spend some of that gift money in its casinos and shops.

New Orleans has always had a reputation for fun, along with unmatchable cuisine. But it's also a very romantic spot: Have a morning coffee on a wraparound porch then head to the historic French Quarter or take the streetcar to neighborhoods lined with graceful old mansions. New Orleans is good destination for couples that want to give something back on their honeymoons---the city is still being rebuilt and needs both support for its construction and cultural programs and tourism revenue in general.

    Winter Wonderland

    • Most couples head for warm destinations, but some prefer winter's outdoor offerings. Breckinridge, Colorado is a great place for cold-weather adventures from skiing to sleigh rides. Then enjoy wine (or hot chocolate) in a honeymoon suite decorated to feel like a luxury log cabin.

    Natural Beauty

    • Maine any time of the year is absolutely beautiful. With the colder weather, almost all suites come equipped with a fireplace to cuddle in front of after a day of hiking to see the beautiful foliage and coastline.

Or take a trip to Niagara Falls, just on the border of the United States and Canada. From the New York State border, you can simply walk into Canada, and the view of Niagara and Horseshoe falls is magnificent. Along the border there are several well-kept historic hotels to stay in. Fun-loving couples should try the Maid of the Mist---a ferry that takes you right up to the falls.
