Ten-year-old children are entering a period of their life when they don't play with kiddie toys as much and are moving on to tween things--magazines, video games, clothes and accessories. However, some children at this age still like dolls, Lego sets, cars and art supplies. Talk to the child and find out what his interests are. This is the best way to decide what to buy for a 10-year-old.

  1. Boys

    • If the 10-year-old boy still plays with toys, some good gifts might be: toy cars, Legos, action figures, trading cards and skateboards. If the boy likes sports, get him new gear or a basketball. Boys at this age also enjoy going to monster truck rallies or a live sports event. The boy also might enjoy tween appropriate things, such as video games, game systems, computers and four-wheelers. Boys tend to prefer toys and hands-on gifts, instead of clothing or grooming items.

    Girls

    • Many girls at this age are beginning to enjoy tween activities such as putting on makeup and hair accessories and trying on new clothes. They might want a new purse, shoes, an MP3 player, bedroom decorations, a cell phone or a hand-held video game system. However, for the younger-minded girl, you could get a new doll, doll clothing set, dress-up kit, art kit, board game or an age-appropriate movie.

    Alternative Gifts

    • Gift cards, money or taking the child out somewhere are good ideas for gifts. Make sure a gift card is for a place the child enjoys shopping at--perhaps a clothing store for a girl or a sporting goods shop for a boy. Department stores work for both sexes. Just like adults, children also enjoy getting money. This makes them feel free to do with it as they please. You also could take them to a good restaurant, a movie, the theater or a sports event.

    Tips

    • Ask parents for approval before purchasing a gift such as makeup, clothing, video games or movies. Always be safe when taking a child on an outing. Make them wear their seat belt and stay with you at all times. You might offer to take one or both of the child's parents along and pay their way as well. If you buy food for the child or take the child out to eat, ask the parents if the child has any food allergies.

    Surprises

    • If you want to surprise your 10-year-old, buy two gifts. Give them one on their birthday and then surprise them with an extra one later that evening. You can even plan a surprise party. Don't tell them which day their party will be on or have the party a day sooner than they think it is going to be. Surprises like this will make an impression on the child and help him remember his 10th birthday for years.
