What Is Ionized Alkaline Water?
Japanese and Korean consumers spend a lot of money on ionized alkaline water. The book Alkalize or Die contributed to the idea that alkaline water has many health benefits. Multi-level marketing schemes often sell these systems to people in the United States. Alkaline ionized water provides few health benefits that normal water does not provide.

How the Alkanization Process Works
-
Ionized alkaline water systems add salt to a house's tap water. The salt causes the water to produce more OH ions and register as alkaline on the PH scale. Drinking alkaline water does not hurt you and may help with stomach acid problems, but over-the-counter antacids have the same effect, according to chem1.com. The system uses electrolysis to separate OH ions from the water.
What Health Benefits Are There?
-
Drinking the correct amount of water does provide health benefits, but it does not matter whether the water is alkaline, acidic or pH neutral. Any additional benefits a person might receive from pH water occur because of the placebo effect. The placebo effect occurs when a person believes something will provide him with a health benefit. Patients often receive the expected benefit even if the treatment does nothing.

Ground Water Sources
-
Consumers who want to drink alkaline ionized water may not have to pay for an electrolysis system if they obtain their water from a well. Well water tends to be sightly alkaline; calcium often seeps into the water table. Well water often has a pH higher than 7. A substance registers as an acid on the pH scale if it has a higher concentration of H+ ions than OH- ions. Bases have a higher concentration of OH- ions than H+ ions.
Pure Water
-
Pure water has a pH of 7 and is neither an acid nor a base. An inclusion of metallic minerals may sway the content of ground water or tap water above or below this base. The marketing scheme to sell ionized alkaline water in the U.S. relies on multi-level marketing companies. The company itself makes few claims and relies on independent contractors to get the word out. By letting a salesman make these claims, the companies that sell these systems avoid getting into trouble with the FTC for making unsubstantiated claims.
Alakline Ionized Water Disinfectant Properties
-
Vpinf.com points out a confusing claim made by many vendors. The vendors claim that ionized alkaline water has strong disinfectant properties because of its acidic properties. If a solution is referred to as alkaline, it means that its pH is higher than 7. Acids have a pH lower than 7.

Sorry for the mis-spellings. I'll be slowing down to proofread responses. -

This is unfortunate. A lack of knowledge can easily lead others astray. For further insight into subject refer to Dr. Robert O Young. To write off the miracle provided rom alkaline ionized water through defining it as a placebo effect is a shame as we all should have the opportunity to be rightly informed to take responsibility for ourseleves.
