- Red is the color of love, and there is no better way to demonstrate the anticipation of first time love or the celebration of love endured. Use 1-inch wide velveteen red ribbon as super-long streamers hanging from a bedroom door. Don't hang your ribbon declaration of love unless there is no doubt that tonight will indeed be the night. If not, tell your partner you hand-dyed the ribbon and are letting it dry.
- Red ribbon and white paper hearts are enchanting on a door either indoors or outdoors. Look for big red bows of 5 inches or more in diameter at dollar or card stores. Separately, buy a spool of red ribbon that matches the bow's color and texture, or is a complementary color in the red family like pink or purple. Place several bows on the door, and cut ribbon streamers of varying lengths to tuck under the bows.
- Red is the color of Christmas. Tie your door up as a big present with red ribbon to let visitors and onlookers know that the spirit of Christmas is alive behind your door. Look for plastic ribbon in home and garden centers or in the Christmas display areas of Kmart or Target. Ribbon should be about 6 inches wide to be visible from the street. Use a big door wreath as gift door's bow instead of a tied ribbon bow.
- You can decorate the personal locker of a coworker or school chum on her birthday or other special day. A row of lockers is a testament in drab sameness. But a decorated locker door is for someone who has been acknowledged as special and one of a kind in a sea of homogeneity, at least for a day.
- If you've got the ribbon and want to decorate a door for a one-of-a-kind look, create a basket weave design. Start by hanging ribbon equal distance apart at the top of the door and secure it to the bottom of the door. Next, take red ribbon cut to size and weave it under and above the ribbon vertical rows. Repeat until the basket weave is revealed. This design is beautiful as a long-term decoration.
